Can a Static Caravan Be Delivered to My Land? 7 Things We Check Before Every Delivery
If you're thinking about buying a static caravan for your garden, farm, equestrian property, self-build project or private land, one question matters more than almost any other...
Can it actually be delivered?
At Static Trader, we've spent many years buying, selling, transporting and siting static caravans across the UK. One thing we've learned is that every delivery is different.
A site that looks easy on Google Maps can quickly become a challenge once a 40ft caravan arrives.
That's why we carry out access checks before every delivery.
Here are the seven things we look for before a caravan even leaves our yard.
1. Road Width
One of the first things we assess is the width of the access road.
Country lanes may look wide enough for a car, but transporting a static caravan is very different.
We need to consider:
-
Passing places
-
Hedges
-
Stone walls
-
Parked vehicles
-
Road signs
Even a few extra inches can make all the difference.
2. Tight Bends
A static caravan doesn't turn like a car.
Sharp bends, village corners and narrow junctions are some of the biggest challenges we face.
Our years of transport experience allow us to judge whether a caravan can safely negotiate these bends before delivery day.
3. Trees and Overhanging Branches
One low branch can stop a delivery.
We always check for:
-
Mature trees
-
Overhanging branches
-
Hedges that need trimming
Sometimes a small amount of preparation is all that's needed.
4. Telegraph Poles and Overhead Cables
It's surprising how often utility poles become the deciding factor.
Even if the road is wide enough, telegraph poles positioned on bends can make certain caravan sizes impossible to deliver.
That's why we assess both the width of the road and the available turning space.
5. Gate Widths
A beautiful caravan is no use if it won't fit through the entrance.
We check:
-
Gate openings
-
Fence posts
-
Walls
-
Trees close to entrances
Many customers are surprised to discover the gateway is actually the tightest part of the entire journey.
6. The Final Position
Getting the caravan onto the property is only half the job.
We also consider:
-
Sloping ground
-
Soft ground
-
Turning room
-
Positioning space
-
Future access
Planning ahead makes installation much smoother.
7. Choosing the Right Caravan
Sometimes the best advice we give is:
"Let's look at a different caravan."
We recently helped a customer who wanted a 39ft x 12ft static caravan for her equestrian property.
After reviewing a simple access video, we identified that the route wouldn't safely accommodate that size.
Rather than risk a failed delivery, we spent time sourcing a smaller caravan that suited both the site and the customer's budget.
The result was a successful delivery and one very happy customer.
Sometimes choosing the right caravan is more important than choosing the biggest one.
How You Can Help Us Carry Out an Access Check
The easiest way is to send us a short video.
If you're travelling in a car as a passenger:
-
Hold your phone in landscape.
-
Start recording from the nearest main road.
-
Keep the whole road in view.
-
Don't worry about driving speed.
Remember...
We can pause the video and study every frame.
Often it's the little details that help us most.
If possible, also send us:
-
A WhatsApp Live Location.
-
Or a What3Words location.
For both the start and finish of your video.
This gives us everything we need to begin assessing the route.
Need Complete Peace of Mind?
If you're still unsure, we're happy to carry out a professional site survey.
For a small fee, we'll visit your property, assess the access and give you honest advice before you buy.
If you go on to purchase a caravan from Static Trader, we'll deduct the survey fee from the purchase price.
It's a small investment that could save you thousands.
