Who Actually Buys Used Static Caravans?

Depending on the age, condition and location of your caravan, potential buyers can include:

  • Private buyers
  • Export buyers
  • Traders
  • Businesses buying caravans for accommodation

Each option has advantages and disadvantages.

A private buyer might potentially pay more, but you'll usually have to deal with advertising, enquiries, viewings, payment and arranging collection.

Selling to an established static caravan buyer can be considerably simpler because they can potentially handle the purchase, payment and collection as one transaction.

Don't Automatically Choose the Highest Offer

This is important.

If one company offers £8,000 and another offers £9,000, it's tempting to immediately accept £9,000.

But ask yourself:

Is £9,000 genuinely what I'm going to receive?

We've spoken to sellers who have accepted attractive offers only for the buyer to arrive on collection day and suddenly start finding reasons to reduce the price.

Once a transporter is sitting outside and you've arranged everything with the holiday park, it can put enormous pressure on a seller to accept less.

Before accepting an offer, ask whether the price is based on the photographs and information you've supplied and under what circumstances it could change.

Check Their History

A website can be built quickly.

A Facebook page can be created this afternoon.

That doesn't automatically mean the people behind it have genuine experience buying and moving static caravans.

Have a look for evidence.

Check:

  • How long the business has actually been operating
  • Genuine customer reviews
  • Previous collections and deliveries
  • Real photographs
  • Company information
  • Contact details
  • Whether there's a genuine history behind the business

Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Experience should be demonstrable, not simply claimed.

Look Beyond Social Media

Social media is useful, but don't base your decision entirely on a Facebook advert.

Search the company name independently.

Look at its website.

Read reviews.

Look through older photographs and posts.

A genuine long-established business should normally leave a trail.

Ask How You'll Be Paid

Before your caravan moves anywhere, understand exactly how payment works.

Ask:

When will I be paid?

How will I be paid?

When will the caravan legally become theirs?

Could the agreed price change?

You shouldn't be embarrassed to ask these questions.

You're potentially selling an asset worth thousands of pounds.

Be Careful With Last-Minute Price Reductions

There is a difference between a genuine undisclosed problem and simply renegotiating because the seller is under pressure.

If a caravan was described as being completely dry but significant damp is discovered, it's reasonable for a buyer to discuss that.

That's why good photographs and honest information are important.

But sellers should be cautious of an attractive initial offer being used simply to secure the deal before a significantly lower figure appears on collection day.

Does the Buyer Understand Static Caravan Transport?

This is something people often overlook.

Buying the caravan is only half the job.

Someone still has to remove it.

Static caravan collection can involve:

  • Park disconnection procedures
  • Restricted access
  • Specialist transport
  • Wide loads
  • Route planning
  • Trees and overhead obstructions
  • Tight entrances
  • Collection deadlines

A buyer with genuine transport experience can identify many of these problems beforehand.

The cheapest or highest offer isn't much use if the caravan can't actually be collected.

Selling From a Holiday Park?

Before selling to an outside company, check your agreement with your holiday park.

There may be procedures relating to outside sales, first refusal, disconnection, outstanding fees or removal.

Ask your park for the relevant requirements and charges before completing the sale.

A reputable buyer shouldn't have a problem with you doing this.

Red Flags When Choosing a Static Caravan Buyer

Be cautious if you're being:

  • Pressured to make an immediate decision
  • Asked to release the caravan before agreed payment arrangements are satisfied
  • Given vague answers about collection
  • Offered an unusually high amount without being asked for proper details or photographs
  • Told the price has dramatically changed at the last minute without a genuine reason
  • Prevented or discouraged from checking the company independently

Sometimes an excellent offer really is an excellent offer.

Just make sure you know who is making it.
